The Solar System :: History

The solar system is a very interesting topic in astronomy. The 9 planets in our solar system are very unique (including Planet 9). People also wonder if there is life in our solar system. This document will tell you about the solar system and why it is very unique.
Solar system age is about 4.6 billion years! It goes all the way back to a cloud of gas and dust, but mainly hydrogen. The cloud starts spinning because of a shock wave which may have been from a supernova explosion. It gets very dense in the middle of the cloud and then BOOM!
This created the Sun! The solar system was not created yet. Planets start from planetesimals. They are like mini planets. The first planet was Jupiter. Astronomers do not actually know if Jupiter was the first planet created. Jupiter was a super Earth. It got into a collision. Once all the planets were created there was another disaster. There was the Great Bombardment Period. This was when most asteroids, comets and meteorites were hitting the planets. This may have given Earth life. After the Great Bombardment Period there was another disaster, most planets orbits changed.
First, the solar system was ordered from Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus then it changed due to change in orbit to Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and then Neptune. Uranus and Neptune did not change one time it changed a few times. Jupiter was heading into the inner solar system while Saturn, Uranus and Neptune were heading out. Some astronomers say that other planets may have been thrown out of the solar system. Everything is now stable.

The Solar System :: The Sun

The Sun is a very unique star. It is the only known star with a planet that has life. The Sun is a middle aged star. It is about 5 billion years old! It is also running out of hydrogen gas. Once it is out of hydrogen, it is going to turn into a red giant. The Sun could have cooled down, but it will have been many times bigger than it was before. It will not explode into a supernova, but it will turn into a white dwarf. It is going to be hot, but it is going to be many times smaller than it was before. A white dwarf is going to be the size of the Earth. The Sun has a magnetic field that goes way past the Oort Cloud. The Oort Cloud is a hypothetical place, where scientists think these comets come from. The Sun is the roman God of light.

The Solar System :: Mercury

Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system. It is smaller than Saturn's moon Titan and Jupiter's moon Ganymede the largest moon in the solar system! Mercury is supposed to be larger than those, but it may have not because during the making of mercury it was hit and it blew off part its crust and mantle and some of may have landed on Earth. Mercury has a huge core. It takes 40% of the volume of mercury! Mercury is the messenger of the gods. Mercury is also unique because an year on Mercury is 88 Earth days and a day on Mercury is 58 Earth days! Mercury is a planet that is small, but it is also unique.

The Solar System :: Venus

Venus is the Earth's sister planet because they almost have the same diameter, but Earth is bigger. Venus has a very harsh climate. The cloud are made from sulfuric acid. It is mostly carbon dioxide over there and it is 900 C That temperature is enough to melt lead! If anyone were living there they would melt. Venus has a serious greenhouse effect. If Earth does not stop global warming it could turn into Venus. Astronomers believe that Venus once did have liquid water and land like us until an asteroid may have perished the water away it may have perished life. Venus has retrograde spin, which means it rotates in opposite direction compare to Sun's rotation. Venus has a protective magnetosphere; it does not have a magnetic field. Venus is the roman God of love and beauty. One day on Venus is more than an year because of very slow rotation. One day on Venus is equal to 243 Earth days and one year on Venus is 225 Earth days. Venus is not cool, but it is unique!

The Solar System :: Mars

Mars is very unique. It is the Earth like planet in the solar system! It also has the largest mountain called Olympus Mons. It is visible from space! Mars also has the largest crater! It's just that it is not visible because it eroded away. A martian day is just 24 hours and 39 minutes. That is very close to the 23 hours and 56 minutes in an Earth day. Astronomers think that mars might have had an ocean because there are still traces of water on mars. Mars also has the same seasons as Earth does. Mars also has a very thin atmosphere. Mars also had a protective magnetic field, but may have lost by some asteroid collision. Mars has 2 small moons: Phobos and Deimos.
The moon phobos will collide in to mars or make planetary rings around mars. However deimos will leave Mars and go straight to the asteroid belt. Mars is also known to have polar ice caps. Mars has very powerful dust storms. Those dust storms are hundred of times more powerful than the dust storms on Earth. In the future around 2500 A.D people would have terraformed mars into a habitable planet. Terreforming a planet means to change it more Earth-like. Mars is the roman God of war. In future people will go to Mars.

The Solar System :: Jupiter

Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. Jupiter is so big that a 1000 earths isn't enough to fill up the giant planet. Jupiter is the roman God of sky and lighting. Jupiter has 3 times the mass of the solar system combined (not including the Sun)! The mass of Jupiter is 318 times that of Earth's! Jupiter has a red spot that about 3 times the size of Earth. Jupiter's great red spot is shrinking. If you can smell Jupiter it would stink. Jupiter has 79 confirmed moons! That includes Io, Europa, Callisto and Ganymede the largest moon in the solar system.
Jupiter also has gotten the worst collisions in the solar system. One of them is the shoemaker levy-9 impact. It started from a comet called Shoemaker Levy-9. It got so close to Jupiter that it broke up in 12 different pieces. Some of those pieces are the size of the Earth! It hit very close to the south pole of Jupiter. It left scars on the planet's face. It eroded away like the erosion on Earth. Jupiter has the largest magnetic field in the solar system (not including the Sun).
Jupiter also has rings. It is not visible because it does not reflect too much light. Jupiter's rings are mostly made of dust. Jupiter's rings could have been part of a moon which has broken apart and formed rings around the Jupiter.

The Solar System :: Saturn

Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system. It is the roman God of agriculture. Saturn is visible because of its rings. Saturn is the 6th planet from the Sun. It has 62 confirmed moons. One of them is Titan a moon with a very dense atmosphere. Saturn has a very low density, so if you put saturn in to a huge pool it would float. Saturn is made out of light gas like hydrogen and helium. Saturn has a hexagon on its North Pole. it looks kind of weird when you look at it. Saturn is also almost the same size as Jupiter. Saturn is the only planet with a beautiful ring system. The ring system are named from discovery. The order is from e, g, f, a, b, c, d. Saturn is 9 times as big as Earth. To keep the rings stable there's a group of moons called shepherd moons. Saturn would be the brightest object if it were close to us. It would be bright because of its rings. Saturn's rings may have formed because of a moon got into a collision into an object and formed saturn's beautiful rings. Saturn is the only planet with a very low density. Saturn is tilted like Earth. Saturn is a planet with very cool features.

The Solar System :: Uranus

Uranus is the third largest planet. Uranus is the roman God of the heavens. Uranus and Neptune are like Earth and Venus. Uranus is like Earth and Neptune is like Venus except they are many times larger than Earth and Venus. It is the 7th planet from the Sun. It also has a weird rotation. It rotates on its side i.e. over the axis. Uranus has 27 confirmed moons. One of them is Miranda. It is the smallest and one of the innermost moons of Uranus. It is mostly blue due to the methane in the planet. Since the planet rotates on its side the rings do the same thing. Uranus moons do the same thing. It looks kind of weird. Uranus orbits like the other planets do. Uranus is made out hydrogen too. Since uranus too far from us, you can't see it in the night sky. Uranus was discovered on March,13 1781 by William Herschel. Uranus was first seen in 1986 by Voyager. It was the last spacecraft to reach Uranus. That all changed when new horizons spacecraft went for a flybye saw uranus. Uranus is very unique and it is just like the gas giants: it has storms, rings, large moons.

The Solar System :: Neptune

Neptune is the 4th and maybe be last planet of the solar system. Neptune is the God of wind and seas. Neptune is the most blue planet in the solar system. Neptune has three big storms! One the great dark spot and the other one is the small dark spot and Scooter. Scooter is a very huge cloud in front of the great dark spot. Neptune has 14 moons. One of them is Triton. It is slightly bigger than Pluto and the seventh largest planet planet in the solar system. It is third largest in mass because uranus has a smaller mass than Neptune. Neptune is the windiest planet in the whole solar system. Neptune is the only planet with very less gas components. It is mostly made out of hydrogen and helium, but there are ammonia and methane. Neptune is also the smallest gas giants in the solar system. You can't see Neptune in the night because it's so far away from the Earth. Neptune is one of the farthest bodies in the solar system. It is also one of the farthest known bodies.

The Solar System :: Planet 9

There might be another planet in the solar system! They named it Planet 9. They named Planet 9 because it's hypothetical. It is about the size of Neptune, but smaller. It could be the fifth largest planet in the solar system. It could have been ejected from the solar system and the Sun's gravitational pull may have pulled it back and planet 9 orbits the Sun today. Planet 9 orbits the Sun every 10,000-20,000 years! One of the dwarf planets Sedna has a very elliptical orbit. It may be because of something pulling it. This might be planet 9. People think about Nibiru a planet which is a hoax. Nibiru could be planet 9 and it is not going to end the world. There is a planet same as planet 9 it's hypothetical. Its name is Tyche a planet which might be many times bigger than Jupiter also which may be a brown dwarf. There is a red dwarf star. It is hypothetical too. This may have led to the extinction of dinosaurs.

The Solar System :: Dwarf Planets

There are many dwarf planets in the solar system. One of them is Pluto. Pluto has 4 moons:Charon, Hydra, Nix, Kerberos and Styx. Charon is half as big as Pluto. Pluto and Charon rotate around the each other because they are a double planet or binary planet system. There is also another dwarf called Eris. It has a moon called Dysnomia. Eris is slightly smaller and massive than Pluto. Mostly every dwarf planet is in the Kuiper belt a system like the asteroid belt. There is the scattered disk which are Kuiper belt rejects. One of these is Sedna which may be redder than mars!

The Solar System :: Earth

[Image source: nasa.gov]

It is our planet in the solar system. Earth is third planet from the Sun. It is just at right distance from the Sun to contain liquid water. It is the only planet to sustain life. Earth is the roman goddess Terra Mater. Earth is in the goldilocks zone. Earth protects many things from us. The ozone layer protects us from cosmic rays. The magnetic field protects us from solar flares and the solar wind. Earth is the fifth or sixth (because of planet 9) largest planet. Earth is only planet in the universe with life. Earth may be one of many planets with life. So when you look up in the sky there might be other planets like ours.

The Earth is the planet which we live on. Earth is the only planet which has life on it. The Earth is also called the blue planet it is full of water. Our beautiful planet is for limited time before the Sun runs out of fuel. Here are lots of important facts about the Earth and how you can help it.

The Solar System :: Earth :: History

When the Solar System in the middle of forming, the rocks (which were scattered all around) which started to get bigger by rocks colliding into each other. With Jupiter's help it threw in rock into the inner solar system causing Earth to turn into a protoplanet. Protoplanet is the beginning stages of a planet. After millions of years the Earth turned into a round shape. There was a time where a mars sized planet called Theia which slammed into the Earth. When it slammed into the Earth the moon started to form, but not 1, but 2 moons were formed until the merged together to create the moon (Luna). The Earth was a rocky planet which looked like Earth. 3.8 billion years ago the Late Heavy Bombardment caused life to rise on Earth.

The Solar System :: Earth :: Life

After the Late Heavy Bombardment, life rises on the Earth. The oldest sign of life is cyanobacteria, which is older than bacteria. Cyanobacteria produced photosynthesis which began to create Oxygen. Photosynthesis is process, which plants use to take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and release Oxygen(O2).

Tides started to form because of the moon. This is how the moon goes farther away from us. The first eukaryotes formed around the Earth. Eukaryotes are cells that have a nucleus. The ozone layer started to form. The ozone(O3) layer is the place where they block harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays.

The Solar System :: Earth :: Climate

The Earth's climate is changing a lot. After the life had formed, there were huge ice ages, there were glaciers which formed lakes and rivers. Ever since humans walked down on the Earth, there have been a lot of changes to the climate. The Earth has started to warm up, but it may cool down due to the ice ages. Later it will heat up because of the Sun. The Earth, which changes its climate lots of lots of time, but there will be a time where the Earth heats up too much because of the Sun. When the climate changes, people change too because of the weather. The Earth is not only warming up because of human activity it is also warming from the Sun because increases its luminosity and size. Luminosity is the amount of energy it emits by any astronomical object in space such as star and galaxy.

The Solar System :: Earth :: Human Activity

Ever since humans walked down on the Earth, Earth has been changing. In the air there is carbon dioxide ( CO2 ) , methane ( CH4 ), sulfur dioxide ( SO2 ), carbon monoxide ( CO ), and all of these chemicals are harmful for all of us. These chemical are known as the greenhouse gases. When greenhouse gases are created they contribute to global warming. The greenhouse gases are like a greenhouse, they let heat in, but they don't let heat out. Carbon Dioxide is produced by us and factories. Methane is found from cow burps and factories. Sulfur Dioxide is found naturally from volcanic eruptions and it is released from factories. Carbon Monoxide is found in factories. Cars, planes pollute the air while boats create water pollution because of their oil spills. There are many things that you can do to help the Earth. You can do the 3R's: recycle, reuse, and reuse. You can use solar energy instead of factories which use electricity. We can also use wind mills which can create electricity from generators.

The Earth has a very destructive history, but it is a very beautiful planet. The Earth does seem to have very dangerous weathers. The Earth is supposed to be a peaceful place. The human race has destroyed its beauty and we need to fix it. Earth is the only planet in the whole solar system which has life and without it we wouldn't be here. We should respect and help our planet. We should not do anything bad, we should do something really good. Please help our planet and fix our mistakes.
